The Awards:

One award of $3000 will be made. The award will recognise outstanding examples of excellence in teaching by colleagues at the start of their career.

Eligibility:

The award is open to staff who: (i) have been coordinating courses at the University of Queensland for at least two semesters; (ii) have been coordinating courses at a university level for no more than the equivalent of four years full-time*. Sessional staff who coordinate courses are invited to apply.

*Colleagues who may have been tutoring for more than four years are invited to apply if they satisfy the other criteria. The Faculty sponsors a separate tutor award.

Application Procedure:

Send completed application forms, signed by the Head of School, together with supporting documentation to Tanya Negerevich (t.negerevich@uq.edu.au), Faculty Learning Support Officer in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, by 5pm on Monday, 12 September 2011.

Required:

  1. Reflective Essay (max. 3 pages, single spaced, 12 point font) outlining your contribution to teaching and learning at UQ, the specific character of your teaching and achievements, and an account of how your teaching enhances student learning outcomes. The essay should also make reference to your current and past teaching responsibilities, your approaches to teaching that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn, approaches to assessment and feedback that foster independent learning, respect and support for the development of students as individuals and, where appropriate, development of curricula and resources.
  2. 1 page summary of SET-Cs or other evaluations, providing assessment of your effectiveness as a University teacher. The number of respondents should be included in survey data.
  3. Confidential reference (max. 1 page, single spaced, 12 point font) from the Head of School on your teaching contribution with respect to the criteria discussed in your reflective essay.

Optional:

Copies of positive communication (e.g. emails, qualitative comments on teaching evaluations and any other relevant material (maximum two pages)

Presentation:

Awardees will be required to give a public presentation outlining their teaching practice.
