The new student learning centre in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (SBS) has not only impressed students, but has won praise from Australia’s premier architecture organisation, the Australian Institute of Architects.

‘The Kakadu Room’ was awarded a State Commendation for Interior Architecture on the 19th June at the 2010 Queensland Architecture Awards.

SBS Faculty Executive Officer Ms Shaughn Forbes is delighted with the achievement.

"The student learning centre is a wonderful area and is deserving of such an award. I am so pleased to provide our students with a positive learning space that they can make their own,” said Ms Forbes.

Inspired by Kakadu National Park and the Australian Outback, the Kakadu Room reflects a calming and inspiring atmosphere. Modern, state-of-the-art facilities, and the latest technology are complimented by mood lighting and simplistic furniture.

The room accommodates the popular use of personal technology, with laptop connections, wireless internet access and flexible design IT/AV equipment.

With printing facilities, hard-wired internet access, large screens and audio/ recording equipment the room is well equipped for productive learning and group work.

Judges of the 2010 Queensland Architecture Awards announced the Kakadu room as 'Client Architecture relationship at its best'.
