How can I study Developemnt?
What is Development?

Development studies at UQ are concerned with providing an understanding of the social, cultural, economic, political and ethical dimensions of development theory and practice. The Development major focuses on strategies to address poverty and inequality, and the impacts of economic progress on society, community groups, Indigenous peoples and the environment. Students engage in critical evaluation of strategies to address international inequality, enhance community development and respond to the varied effects of development on the social and physical environment. Issues covered include concepts of development, poverty and inequality, Indigenous rights, gender and development, environmental sustainability, security and development, and the social and political implications of globalisation, and consider how and why these issues may be related. The major will offer students the knowledge and skills to analyse social and economic issues and develop, implement and evaluate policy solutions.

What job can I get?

This area of study caters for those who are preparing for careers in government and non-government organisations (NGOs) focused on the social and economic needs of those in disadvantaged communities in developing and developed countries. It is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills for employment in international and community development, democratic institution building, rebuilding communities in postconflict situations, environmental policy making and social impact assessment.
