The School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Queensland is widely acknowledged as one of the leading Schools of Biomedical Sciences in Australia. The School comprises 47 teaching and learning academic staff with 11 Professors, 14 Associate Professors, 8 Senior Lecturers, 5 Lecturers and 9 Associate Lecturers. In addition, the School is home to a number of prestigious Research Fellows funded externally by both the NHMRC and the ARC.
The School’s excellent performance in research and teaching is reflected in the continuous growth in external competitive research funding and the awards received by numerous staff for teaching excellence. One of our research strengths has been the Neurosciences which led to the establishment of the
Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland in 2006. Our staff have broad research interests and they have been appointed as foundation members of both the
Institute of Molecular Biosciences and the
Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. In recent years the School has strengthened its research base with Professorial appointments in a diversity of fields including Pharmacology, Developmental Biology, Endocrinology, Cell Physiology, Biophysics and Comparative Physiology.
A number of previous staff members of The School of Biomedical Sciences have become members of the prestigious
Australian Academy of Sciences including: Professor Professor Julie Campbell; Professor Perry Bartlett; and Professor Peter Koopman. This is a stellar record considering that there are only 20 Fellows in all of Queensland. Emeritus Professor Jack Pettigrew is also a Fellow of the Royal Society.
Our vision is to attract the best and brightest academics in these fields to the University of Queensland and educate the next generation of science leaders in Australia.
The University of Queensland is ranked 29 in the world's top 100 for biomedicine.
