Pharmacology & Toxicology

Research into the molecular mechanism of the action of drugs is of major importance in the biomedical sciences. This understanding can lead to the discovery of new drugs as well as better use of existing drugs for the treatment of human diseases. Pharmacologists at UQ focus on a variety of areas including the action of anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular drugs, neurotransmitter release and transport, as well as drug metabolism and toxicology.

The research in Pharmacology at UQ has resulted in the formation of Promics Pty Ltd, established to develop novel anti-inflammatory agents. Pharmacology is also a key participant in TetraQ, a drug development initiative between the University of Queensland, the Queensland Institute for Medical Research and Q-Pharm Pty Ltd.
