 Postgraduate Symposium

Each semester the School organises a Postgraduate Symposium where students approaching the end of their studies are able to formally present a seminar to their peers.

In late 2007 the Postgraduate Committee introduced a Poster Competition  where all students have the opportunity to present their work in a professional environment. This new initiative is expected to produce some creativeness amongst the students as they compete for a number of special prizes.

This year’s Special Guest Speaker at the School of Biomedical Science Postgraduate Symposium, Professor David Vaux (Department of Biochemistry, La Trobe University), will be presenting a Lecture at 3:00pm on 29th November (see details below). This lecture is in addition to his talk at the Symposium.

Title: Ten rules for the presentation and interpretation of data in publications

Synopsis: Science is knowledge gained through repeated observation or experiment. It is communicated through publication of papers in journals. Science can only flourish if journals maintain minimal standards, and papers are read critically. In this talk I will propose ten rules of thumb for the presentation of data in publications that can also be used when interpreting other people's papers. The talk will be illustrated by numerous examples of papers by high profile researchers in prestigious journals that would only have had some value had they been printed on more absorbent paper with perforated pages.

Presented by:   Professor David Vaux, Department of Biochemistry, La Trobe University
Date: Thursday 29th November, 2007
Time: 3:00 – 4:00pm
Venue: Physiology Lecture Theatre, 63-348
