 Network Guidelines

Privately Owned Computers on the UQ Network Guidelines

Privately owned machines are allowed to be placed on the UQ network. They are subject to the restrictions outlined below.
  1. No hardware support. BITS will not provide any hardware support for private machines. All hardware issues are the responsibility of the owner.
  2. No software support. BITS will not provide any software support.
  3. The operating system must be either a minimum of WinXP SP2 or OS10.4.
  4. The machine must have an active up to date antivirus scanner installed.
  5. Peer to Peer (P2P) software is not allowed to be installed on the machines.

Network Resources

All privately owned machines will be registered by BITS so they can obtain network access. This will give them the ability to use network resources (file and print shares) and browse the internet.
Privately owned PC’s will not be joined to the domain. Access to network resources is provided by the use of VPN software which is offered pre-configured and free from ITS. Instructions on how to access network resources can be obtained from BITS.

Access to Software
The licensing arrangement for software under the control of BITS states that the software can only be installed on UQ assets. This means that none of the software we have can be installed on privately owned machines, with the exception of Graphpad Prism.  For heavily subsidised access to the Microsoft Suite of products, users should visit UQ Connect (just beside the Red Room on the St Lucia Campus).
