The living world has some amazing stories to share, if we take the time to listen and watch. The flashing patterns of colour we see on coral reefs reveal how animals communicate and can also provide a measure of coral health.
Increasing reports of dramatic colour loss, or coral bleaching, indicate that corals are under serious stress all over the world. You can help to better understand and reduce this stress.
CoralWatch is the University of Queensland’s international coral health monitoring and reef education program. We provide simple tools to measure the health of corals and encourage people to live and behave in ways that protect
and improve the condition of reefs and other ecosystems. Coral Health Charts allow anyone; scientists, school children, tourists, divers and politicians, to contribute to reef research and conservation. Out in the field, simply compare
the brightness of coral colours with the brightnessof the colours on the chart and record matching codes. In the classroom, use CoralWatch virtual tools for demonstrations and hands-on learning.
