Mandatory requirements/training for tutors

The School of Biomedical Sciences is dedicated to the provision of a quality learning experience. As such, we give high priority to the professional development and support of our staff.

There are three components to the Tutor Training / Induction Program. Each of these is compulsory for all newly appointed staff and must be completed before contact with students. These sessions constitute work; as such attendance/completion is recorded and remunerated accordingly.

1.       The Online Occupational Health and Safety, Privacy and Fire Safety  training modules: Casual tutors will be paid a flat rate of one hour upon completion of induction training. This hour will be automatically added to a timesheet once HR is notified by OH&S as to who has completed the training.

Online Health and Safety Training - The OH&S unit is now running all OH&S online training through Blackboard and can be accessed here with your UQ login.

Annual Fire Safety and Privacy Training (both mandatory) will remain on ELMO as these are not administrated by the OHS Unit. You can access these via http://www.elearn.com.au/uq2/START.htm

2.       The Faculty of Science tutor training:

The Faculty of Science is holding a training session for all new tutors at both UQ St Lucia and UQ Gatton. Please note that all new tutors are expected to attend. You will be paid for 4 hours of training time, and lunch will be provided.

The program is built around the Tutors@UQ program, developed by the University as a major project that included considerable consultation with tutors, staff and students in 2009/10. Each tutor will be given a ‘learner Guide’ to assist them and serve as a reference point during their tutoring career at UQ. The program for the workshop includes;

A third session will run during the semester, and will provide opportunities for a debrief on your experiences in your first semester of tutoring, as well as addressing any further questions that may have arisen during your tutoring, and canvassing strategies on how to continue to improve your tutoring.
