STAFF INFORMATION
Staff from across the University farewelled Mr John Power on Thursday 7 October 2004. John is planning to move to northern NSW. Mr Michael Maliborski has replaced John in Secretariat Services. Michael will continue to take room bookings for meeting rooms on level 5 of the Brian Wilson Chancellery.
HIGHER EDUCATION SUPPORT ACT (HESA) REFORMS UPDATE
Training for Staff on the Higher Education Reforms for 2005
Detailed training on the implications for UQ of the Higher Education Reforms will be conducted over the next two months. Training will be offered at St Lucia, Gatton, Ipswich and Herston. All staff are welcome there are four courses; HESA Fundamentals, HESA Administration, HESA Financials Overview and HESA Financials Detail. Training is offer on the following days for details of when the four courses are offered and the location go to www.tedi.uq.edu.au - under Staff Development> UQ's Staff Development website >Finance, Admin, IT and Technical Support>University Administrative>HESA.

HUPP - WHAT'S NEW?
Senate approved the following new amendments to existing policies at its meeting on 7 October 2004. Full details on the policy changes can be found in "What's New" section of the HUPP (http://www.uq.edu.au/hupp/whatsnew.asp).
1.50.2 Outside Work and Business Interests for University Staff
A new policy to replace the former policies regarding Consultative and other Outside paid Work and Commercial Research and Related Activity and the Outside Work and Business Interest - General and Research Staff. The policy describes the types of outside work permitted and exceptions, conditions for undertaking outside work, business interests, conflicts of interest and dispute resolution.
3.20.2 Program standardisation
The policy has been revised following the approval of the recommendations in the Report of the Postgraduate Coursework Awards Working Party.
3.20.3 Academic Program approval
The policy has been amended to include revised procedures for consideration of academic programs following adoption of the report on the review of APPC and APRC.
3.20.6 Postgraduate Coursework
The policy has been revised following the approval of the recommendations in the Report of the Postgraduate Coursework Awards Working Party.
3.20.8 Curriculum Review
The policy has been amended to insert new timelines for submission of monitoring reports.
3.20.14 Award of Honours
The policy has been amended following the adoption of the Honours Working Party report to include revised policies regarding criteria for award of honours in programs.
3.30.5 Examinations
The policy has been amended to delete reference to additional examinations time for NESB students and a new statement added regarding provision of dictionaries for students added.
4.60.1 Effective Guidance: The Role of the Advisor for Research Higher Degree Students
Previously policy was 'Good supervision: The Role of the Supervisor: Research Higher Degree Students. The policy has been revised to reflect current University policy.
4.60.2 Postgraduate Research Student Charter
The policy has been revised to reflect current University policy.
4.60.3 Statement of Postgraduate Research Attributes
New policy articulation of attributes of postgraduate students.
5.41.2 Tutorial Fellows and Tutorial Assistants
The policy has been updated to incorporate revised administrative procedures and update terminology to reflect Academic Enterprise Bargaining Agreement.
5.41.5 Appointment, Probation and Confirmation of Continuing Appointment (Academic Staff)
The policy has been amended to reflect the administrative procedures associated with consideration of academic appointments.
5.30.14 Volunteer Workers
The policy has been updated to incorporate revised administrative procedures including deletion of obsolete references and updating of terminology.
5.80.12 Academic Promotion
The policy has been amended to clarify the text
7.30.2 Guidelines for Advertising Events with Alcohol
Former 'Alcohol Advertising Guidelines' policy. The policy has been revised to bring in alignment with recent changes to the Voluntary Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code
PINK RIBBON DAY

AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS BLOOD SERVICE
The Blood Bank Donormobile will be visiting UQ in the Student Union Plaza from 25 October to 5 November 2004. Hours of operation are 9am to 4pm each week day. To donate blood you must take with you your drivers licence or other personal identification.
UQ-ORDER OF AUSTRALIA ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION BURSARY OFFER
The University of Queensland is one of three universities selected by the Order of Australia Association Foundation to award one of its prestigious bursaries in 2005. The UQ-Order of Australia Association Foundation Bursary is valued at $15,000 per year, tenable for up to 3 years, and is open to financially disadvantaged students who are Australian citizens and who will be commencing the equivalent of the second year of their current undergraduate program in 2005.
The Foundation will also provide a volunteer mentor who will work with the Bursary winner to provide guidance and assistance in their career training and development. BEL HECS-BASED POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
The Faculty of Business Economics & Law offers HECS-based Postgraduate Scholarships in each semester to members of the general staff who have been in a full-time continuing appointment/s within the University for a period of at least two years and who gain admission to a postgraduate coursework program within the Faculty. Applicants must apply separately for admission to the relevant program.

THE FORD MEMORIAL PRIZE 2004
(Poetry Competition)
Applications are invited for the Ford Memorial Prize from undergraduates who, not having already been twice awarded the prize, submit the best poem in English published or unpublished.
The value of the prize for 2004 is $200 in the form of books.
