Researchers often involve higher degree research students in their projects. On other occasions, researchers support students to gain funds from external sources to aid in their thesis projects. While these are useful ways for students to fund their study at the university, obtain research experience, and exposure to industry contacts, there has been a noticeable number of problems arising from this work, with consequent far reaching implications for the University and, in some cases, for individual researchers.
In an attempt to protect the interests of the University and its researchers without preventing support from external sources for students, the Research and Research Training Division (RRTD) has developed guidelines that set out common scenarios as they relate to students in research. The guidelines also set out implications and offer possible ways to proceed which will minimise the risks for both researchers and students who may be involved in any of these scenarios. An instructions sheet from the RRTD Research Legal Services regarding students in research is also attached to facilitate and expedite appropriate legal negotiations.
