Splitting Credit for research income in the Internal Funding Allocations

Each year a significant component of the internal funding allocations to Faculties and Institutes is based on research performance as measured by the dollar value of research income (45%), the number of publications produced (10%), and the number of research higher degree awarded (15%) and the research higher degree Load in EFTSU (30%). The research income component in this formula is based on the actual income during the calendar year as compiled by Research Accounting. Income is listed under the cost centre that holds the actual grant money and so 'credit' within the internal funding formula is given to the School/Centre/Institute that "owns" that cost centre. The practice has been to create accounts for research grants within the School of the first named Chief Investigator.

The Research and Research Training Division makes adjustments to the data used in formulating the internal Faculty Funding Budget allocation to take into account the fact that some research grants represent collaborations between two or more Schools or Centres. Credit for projects involving investigators from more than one School can be divided between Schools.

We will only do this when all of the respective Heads/Directors have provided a signed agreement stating that credit should be shared between their Schools/Centres/Institutes and indicating the percentage split (using Split Credit form).

For continuing projects that have previously split along department lines, the credit will be divided between Schools wherever the departments are in different Schools, using the percentage allocation as previously requested. For departments that have merged into the same School, all credit will be reported within that School.

It is important to emphasise that the distribution of internal funds is made at faculty level, and that School allocations are at the discretion of the Executive Deans. The RRTD does provide faculties with spreadsheets that breakdown the data by School and individual account, but there is no requirement that these be used for distribution within the faculty. Any retrospective adjustment for shared activity can only be done by negotiation between Schools and faculties.

Requests to split credit for each project must be made on the Split Credit form, signed by the heads of all Schools or Institute/Centre Directors involved, and submitted to the Information Management Unit Coordinator, Research and Research Training Division.

Requests relating to 2009 income must be received before Friday 7th May, 2010 for consideration in the 2011 allocation.

A separate request must be made for each project. The Heads or Directors of all involved Schools, Centres and/or Institutes must sign each request.

Once applied for, a credit split is applied to the grant for every year that it is included in the Research Income collection. A credit split does not have to be renewed. It will continue to be applied automatically each year. However, a new form will be required if the credit split percentages are changed.
