External Funding Allocations
The primary source of information on research related income and outputs (publications) is the Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC). This data is used in external funding formulae such as the Institutional Grants Scheme, Research Training Scheme and the Commercialisation Training Scheme.
Only certain categories of publications attract external funding, including:
• Research books (A1)
• Chapters in research books (B1)
• Refereed journal articles (C1)
• Refereed conference papers (E1)
Other internal categories are available, and publications that do not meet the HERDC criteria for external funding should still be included for the production of the University Bibliography.
For further details on the HERDC, please refer to the DIISR website.
Internal Funding Allocations
The 2010 Teaching and Research Budget will be allocated to faculties according to research performance.
The formula is expected to include:
• Higher Degree Research Load EFTSU, weighed by a Faculty Funding Index (30%);
• Higher Degree Research Awards - PhDs are weighted double Masters. These are then weighed according to a Faculty Funding Index (15%);
• Research Income, unweighted (45%); and
• DIISR category publications (10%).
Please note that UQ internal categories are no longer used in the internal funding formula. They will, however, continue to be used for bibliographic purposes, and still need to be reported (see below).
To be eligible for internal funding, publications in the 2010 collection must meet all the DIISR criteria including year of publication. Publications that were published in an earlier year but were not collected until the 2010 collection (i.e. missed their correct collection year) will no longer be funded internally.
The University of Queensland Bibliography
The Reseach and Research Training Division uses the data collected in order to compile a complete bibliography for the university. This bibliography can be searched and downloaded from UQ ReSEARCHers.
Freedom of Information of Documents Sent to DIISR
All documents sent to DIISR with regard to the HERDC are subject to the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act). Unless a document falls under an exemption provision, it may be made available to the applicant, if requested, under the FOI Act.
Decisions regarding requests for access to documents will be made by the department’s authorised FOI decision-maker in accordance with the requirements of the FOI Act.
HERDC data is published on the DIISR’s website.
The Australian Government may include the research income and publications data in its publications.
