Smart Futures (Early and Mid Career) Fellowships

Internal RRTD closing date for full applications: 19 October 2009

The Queensland State Government has recently opened applications under the Smart Futures Fellowships scheme. Smart Futures Fellowships aim to build Queensland’s research base by enhancing the skills of existing researchers and attracting new researchers to the State.

Fellowships are offered at two levels:

Level 1 Fellowships (for mid-career researchers)

Grant size of $100,000 per annum for three years for mid-career researchers who have more than six years postdoctoral research experience.

Level 2 Fellowships for early career researchers

Grant size of $50,000 per annum for three years for researchers who have up to six years postdoctoral research experience.

All Smart Futures Fellowship funding must be matched by cash contributions from one or more sponsoring organisations, with the principal sponsor being the fellow’s employing organisation. Applicants may also have one or more co-sponsoring organisations that provide cash contributions to the proposed fellowship. The matched funding must be no less than 1:1 (Queensland Government contribution: sponsor/co-sponsor contribution).

Projects that fall within one of the strategic priority areas of the Queensland Government listed below may be prioritised.

·               Supporting research and commercialisation of Queensland’s tropical expertise
·               Supporting climate change adaptation and/or mitigation, and renewable energy
·               Building social science capabilities aligned to the Toward Q2 Tomorrow’s Queensland priorities

The internal closing date for full Smart Futures Fellowships is 19 October 2009 in RRTD. Review and checking of applications will take place in RRTD before final versions are submitted to the State.

As Smart Futures Fellowships involve the commitment of UQ cash, UQ applicants are required to submit a [.doc]UQ Cash Commitment proforma as soon as possible, but no later than 6 October 2009.

Applicants intending to seek industry co-sponsorship should work with their Faculty/Institute Manager of Innovation and Commercial Development (MICD) in terms of the UQ/industry linkage component of the Fellowship application.
