Research Legal is responsible for representing the University’s interests in relation to research contracts and other research matters
The legal counsel in Research Legal undertake a wide range of legal work on behalf of the University that typically ranges from the preparation, review and negotiation of agreements to establish new research collaboration through to the provision of advice in relation to research collaborations that have been established. Research Legal undertakes this work by:
- liaising with the various stakeholders that are involved in the University’s research projects (including, in particular, researchers and the commercialisation companies); and
- giving the University’s delegates advice to enable those delegates to bind the University to research-related transactions with confidence that the relevant legal issues have been considered.

Standard and Pre-approved Research Contracts
In limited circumstances, these standard form and pre-approved research contracts may be signed on behalf of the University by an Executive Dean or Director of Institute. All other research contracts may only be signed on behalf of the University as mandated by the Financial Management Practice Manual and, generally speaking, UQR&I practice is that the Director (Research Partnerships) and the Director (Research Strategy and Management) sign research contracts on a day to day basis.
