 About the Collection

Each year, the University of Queensland's Research and Research Training Division (RRTD) conducts the bibliographic data collection for the previous academic year. This is an official record of each piece of research, conducted by a staff member or student of the university, which has culminated into an official publication. Publications are sorted according to categories, including books, book chapters, journal articles, conference papers and others, as referred to in the specifications.

Why Collect Publications Data?

The bibliographic publication collection not only serves as an official listing for university records, but it is also a requirement of the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Innovation, Science and Research (DIISR). It is on the basis of this collection that funding is allocated from the federal government. This data is used to measure the quality and quantity of the university's research.

Who Submits the Publications Data?

While RRTD organises and oversees the collection, it is the responsibility of each school, centre or institute to collate the publications produced by their staff and students, enter each record into the data collection system, and submit the required evidence to us. The school, centre or institute of the first named University of Queensland author of a publication is responsible for the entry and submission of the data.

How is the Funding Allocated?

Only publications that meet DIISR requirements are funded. External funding is only allocated to the publications that are published in the year being collected. The specifications for the Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) lists the rules for the inclusion of publications for government funding, the data to be collected and the supporting evidence required for each publication.
