Introduction
The following resources will assist in budgeting for the direct costs associated with your research project. Specific resources related to staff appointments and salaries are available from Human Resources and links to these resources have been provided below. Links to resources related to University travel are provided below.
Research Support Staff
When planning your research project, it is important to consider the research support staff you may need to recruit to the project, and the skills/qualifications they will require to undertake certain research activities. These research support staff may include General Assistants, Research Technicians, Research Assistants and/or Research Managers. At UQ , these staff are usually appointed as research-related general staff, at HEW Level 1-9.
The UQ Policy on Evaluation and Classification of Positions (HUPP 5.40.3) includes classification guidelines that outline the training level or qualifications and indicative tasks/activities that would normally be expected of staff appointed in research-related general staff positions. Links to the Policy and the research-related general staff classification guidelines are included below.
We encourage investigators to discuss the appropriate level of appointment for research support staff with their local HR officers.

UQ Salary Scales
In order to accurately calculate salary funding requests for a research project, investigators should refer to the current UQ salaries and allowances available on the Current Staff website. Specific queries related to salary costs for particular research staff should be discussed with the local HR officer.
Salary On-Costs
When costing research budgets, applicants will need to ensure salary on-costs are included for any salary items listed in the budget. The ARC recommends an on-cost rate of 28% for all salaries, and we would encourage investigators to use this on-costs rate in calculating their budgets.
The University salary on-costs are slightly lower, and vary depending on the type and duration of appointment. For specific UQ on-costs rates, please consult with your local HR officer.
Travel and Subsistence Allowances
Travel and subsistence allowances for research projects should be calculated in accordance with UQ policy and procedures, as oultined on the Travelling @ UQ website.
If travel or subsistence allowances are requested as part of a research budget, the proposal should provide specific details regarding the proposed origin and destination of the travel, and indicate how accommodation and subsistence allowances have been calculated. In some cases, quotes for the proposed travel costs may be required by the grantor.
