UQ - FEAST workshop - European Research Opportunities

To follow on from the 'UQ in Europe' seminar held in March, Global Engagement invites you to a workshop presented by FEAST – Forum for European-Australian Science and Technology Cooperation, on European Research Opportunities. The presentations will allow time for questions, feedback and exchanges from participants and include: 1. Current trends in the analysis of international collaborations: lessons for strategies, tactics and policy development, advice on strengthening research cooperation with Europe, analysis of activities and experience to date in Australian engagement with FP7; 2. Out of the crisis: an overview on the Future of European research and innovation programs post FP7, the Horizon 2020 proposal; 3. Early career training and career development opportunities (the European Research Council, Marie Curie actions); 4. National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) - Presentation

Dr ZOU Liyao, Deputy Director-General, Bureau of International Cooperation, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) will give a presentation 'NSFC International Cooperation and Exchanges' and the organisers would like to invite you to attend to this event. The presentation will focus on it funding mechanisms, major categories of programs, the partnership with ARC and other international funding agencies.

This event has been scheduled initially for 13 June 2012, but the organisers have rescheduled it for 06 June 2012, due to unforeseen changes in the Foundation delegation’s travel dates.

1st International Conference on BioNano Innovation (ICBNI)

The 1st International Conference on BioNano Innovation (ICBNI) provides a wonderful multi-disciplinary forum to connect scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs in this rapidly expanding area. The conference will feature an exciting list of International leaders and experts in this field. As well as Plenary and Keynote sessions, the conference will host five parallel symposia: Nanostructured Polymers, Vaccines, Functional Nanomaterials and Nanosystems, Regenerative Medicine, and Synthetic Biology. To encourage young researchers, the conference will also hold a special symposium for Early Career researchers (the BioNano ECR Symposium) on Wednesday 18 July 2012.

Australian Lung Cancer Conference (ALCC) 2012

2012 Australasian Association for Institutional Research (AAIR) Annual Forum

International

European Union's FP7 Capacities Work Programme: Part 7 - Activities of International Cooperation 2012

The European Commission have advised that UQ’s proposal - 'Connecting Australian-European Science and Innovation Excellence' (CAESIE) - received a very positive evaluation result. We are pleased to confirm the Commission has agreed to enter into negotiations to provide around €1.5 million for the three-year proposal, subject to completion of administrative processes by 30 June 2012.

Subject to completion of the Commission's requirements, and taking into account the European summer break, we anticipate that the project will start in September/October this year and a commencement/planning meeting will be hosted by the Project Manager, the International Bureau of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), in Germany.

Further updates will be provided upon the commencement phase of the project.

Tenth International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities
Thursday, 14 June to Saturday, 16 June

The Conference will address a range of critically important themes in the various fields that make up the humanities today. Plenary speakers will include some of the world’s leading thinkers in the humanities, as well as numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by teachers and researchers. The 2012 conference will address the Special Theme – Looking Forward: Humanities for the Future.

2012 International Congress on Engineering and Information (ICEAI 2012) - Call for Papers

The Conference on Science in Society 2012 - Call for Papers
Saturday, 17 November to Monday, 19 November

University of California, Berkeley, USA

This conference addresses the social impacts, values, pedagogies, politics and economics of science. It is an inclusive forum that welcomes a breadth of perspectives on science from practitioners, teachers and researchers representing a wide range of academic disciplines.

The deadline for the current round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 22 May 2012.

National

Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research

This $50,000 grant is awarded to a nominated person who has made an outstanding discovery (or discoveries) in clinical or experimental biomedical research that has had an important impact on biomedical science, clinical medicine, or the way in which healthcare is delivered. Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science

This award is presented annually by The Franklin Institute to an individual of any nationality for outstanding work in the basic, applied, or engineering sciences. A gold medal and a cash prize of $250,000 are awarded. The theme for the 2013 Bower Award is Photonic Source Technology. Further information is available from http://www.fi.edu/email/awards/. Notice of intent to nominate is encouraged by 31 March 2012, with complete nominations due by 31 May 2012.

Research Australia Awards

The Research Australia Awards recognizes and celebrates achievement and contribution to the landscape of health and medical research in Australia. There are a number of awards, including the Discovery Award and Leadership & Innovation Award, which could apply to a nominee from UQ. The awards are presented in front of an assembled audience representing Research Australia’s member community, supporters, the business community, politicians, and other notable guests. UQ, as a member organisation of Research Australia are eligible to support nominations, however a secondary nominating organisation, which does not have to be a member of Research Australia, is required for each nomination. Scopus Young Researcher Awards 2012

The Australasian researchers are well known internationally for their achievements and dedicated contributions to various fields of research. To honour these achievements the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) and Elsevier are proud to bring you the Scopus Young Researcher of the Year Awards for 2012.The Awards for 2012 will be presented within the following categories: 1. Humanities and Social Sciences; 2. Physical Sciences; 3. Engineering and Technology; 4. Life Sciences and Biological Sciences; 5. Medicine and Medical Sciences. Grawemeyer Award in Education

The University of Louisville invites nominations from throughout the world by professional educators, educational institutions and organizations, and editors and publishers of journals, books and software, for the Grawemeyer Award in Education. The sponsor provides a $100,000 prize for ideas that have the potential to bring about significant improvement in educational practice and advances in educational attainment. To be considered for the 2013 award, the nomination form and letter must be received by 30 April 2012, and all supporting materials for the nomination must reach the University of Louisville by 31 May 2012. AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize

AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize was established in 1923 and is awarded to the author or authors of an outstanding paper published in the Research Articles or Reports sections of Science between June 2011 to May 2012. An eligible paper is one that includes original research data, theory, or synthesis; is a fundamental contribution to basic knowledge or is a technical achievement of far-reaching consequence; and is a first-time publication of the author's own work. Self-nominations are not accepted. The prize includes a cash award of $25,000, a bronze medal and travel to the AAAS Annual Meeting for the award presentation. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation - Gates Vaccine Innovation Award

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are now accepting nominations for the Gates Vaccine Innovation Award. The Foundation invites individuals or groups of individuals who have achieved significant improvements in the prevention, control, or elimination of vaccine preventable diseases through immunization which have resulted in tangible improvements in immunization coverage in developing countries. The foundation will recognize the winning innovation with a US $250,000 prize. Further information is available from http://www.gatesfoundation.org/vaccines/Pages/vaccine-innovation-award.aspx. Nominations will be accepted through 11:59 pm, U.S. Pacific Standard Time on 31 August 2012.
