The aims of the NHMRC Early Career Fellowship scheme are:

  • To enable developing health and medical researchers of outstanding ability to undertake advanced training in health and medical research either in Australia or overseas; 
  • To provide opportunities for Australian researchers to undertake research that is both of major importance in its field and of benefit to Australian health;
  • To foster career development at the postdoctoral level by encouraging the beneficial experience of a different research environment.


The following are the key round dates for NHMRC Early Career Fellowships for funding commencing in 2018: 

Release of Funding Rules: 11 January 2017
Proposals Open in RGMS: 11 January 2017
Full applications (Internal UQR&I deadline): 3 February 2017
Full applications (External NHMRC deadline): 1 March 2017
Submission of Supervisor's Report: External (NHMRC): 1 March 2017
Expected announcement of successful applicants: October 2017

Step 1: Join the UQR&I Mailing List. Official announcements and UQR&I updates regarding the scheme will be sent via the Mailing List.
Step 2: Familiarise yourself with the key UQ and NHMRC documentation (see below).
Step 3: Familiarise yourself with your Faculty/Institute specific grant peer review process.
Step 4: Obtain Access to the NHMRC’s Research Grants Management System (RGMS). Start early if you are new to RGMS and need a login/password.
Step 5: Complete/Update your Profile and CV in RGMS. For further information refer to the NHMRC's 'Advice and Instructions to Applicants 2017' available on the NHMRC Website.
Step 6: Complete the application in RGMS.
  • Initiative = Early Career Fellowships
  • Round = 2017_Early Career Fellowship_funding_commencing_2018
  • Administering Institution = The University of Queensland
  • RAO Edit Access: Yes (this will enable UQR&I to better assist you during the application process)
Step 7: Lodge the application to UQR&I for Internal Review
  • Ensure all RGMS online components are complete and all relevant PDFs are uploaded.
  • Generate your proposal Snapshots under ‘Properties - Request Latest Snapshot’.
  • Email your completed UQ Funding Application Coversheet and UQ NHMRC Early Career Fellowship Certification Form to UQR&I. These are needed to initiate internal review of your application.
Step 8: Internal Review by UQR&I/feedback provided (compliance/eligibility/strategy).
Step 9: Certification by applicant in RGMS and final submission of application to the Funding Agency by UQR&I.

Applicants may request access to previously successful funding applications using the UQR&I Grants Library Access Form.
