The Queensland Government Advance Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Fellowships program supports early-career Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers in undertaking a three year research project.

Fellowship funds of up to $240,000 over 3 years (excluding GST) are available.

The following are the key round dates for Advance Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Fellowships for funding commencing in 2017:

  • The State Government indicates that applications will be assessed in the order that they are received until the funding pool is exhausted

As per previous rounds, UQ will use a mandatory cash commitment proforma phase to formalise cash commitments from School, Faculty, Institute, and Central sources. Following sign-off of cash commitments, applicants proceed to prepare a full proposal.

  • Step 1: Join the UQR&I Mailing List. Official announcements and UQR&I updates regarding the scheme will be sent via the Mailing List.
  • Step 2: Familiarise yourself with the key UQ and funding agency documentation (see below).
  • Step 3: Complete the UQ Cash Commitments Proforma and return to UQR&I by the due date listed above.
  • Step 4: Ensure that you have created an account and are familiar with the QLD Government Online Application System.
  • Step 5: Complete the Online Application Form and any relevant supporting documentation.
  • Step 6: Lodge the application to UQR&I for Internal Review via email -
    • Ensure that all attachments and letters of support are provided with the Application Form.
    • Please include a word version of your draft UQ letter of support to allow for review and signing.
    • Also include a signed Financial Incentive Agreement Declaration to allow for counter-signing on behalf of UQ.
    • Forward your completed UQ Funding Application Coversheet to UQR&I. This is needed to initiate internal review of your application.
  • Step 7: Internal review by UQR&I/feedback provided (compliance/eligibility/strategy). UQR&I will also return a signed Letter of Support and counter-signed FIA Declaration, on behalf of UQ as the Sponsor.
  • Step 8:  Log into the QLD Government Online Application System, upload all revised attachments and sponsor letters and submit the application. Please refer to a separate email from UQR&I outlining the submission steps in more detail.
