The University of Queensland (UQ) is a leading research and teaching university, committed to ensuring the humane care and use of animals. The Animal Ethics Unit (AEU) is committed to assisting the University in maintaining the highest standards of ethical decision-making, animal husbandry and care as a contribution to achieving high quality research and teaching outcomes.

The AEU provides administrative support to and coordinates the activities of the University’s five Animal Ethics Committees (AECs) and its Animal Ethics Management Committee. Its key operational areas are:

  • Documentation and record keeping
  • Professional advice and monitoring
  • Regulatory compliance and education 

The AEU is always available to help UQ staff and students in all matters related to animal work at the University of Queensland, including (but not limited to):

  • Assistance in understanding the legislation governing work using animals
  • Guidance in applying for Animal Ethics Committee clearance
  • Information regarding permits required before beginning work with animals
  • Recommendations in considering the 3Rs when working with animals
  • Advice in developing best-practice methods for procedures and animal monitoring
  • Direction if unexpected adverse events occur
