| Tackling teacher burn-out ... Dr Pendergast |
UQ Ipswich researcher, Dr Donna Pendergast, is finding new ways to tackle teacher burnout using fresh research methods based on graphic-design techniques. In a world-first longitudinal study of how teachers construct their identity, Dr Pendergast is investigating perceptions of middle years’ teaching through a series of self-made drawings that illustrate prospective student teachers’ vision of teaching.
These drawings reveal student perceptions at both the beginning and conclusion of their studies, together with an idealised version of teaching. Dr Pendergast presented her preliminary findings at the 2007 Middle Years of Schooling Association Conference. “I think the clear message from the results of this research is that the reality of teaching is far from students’ initial perceptions of teaching,” she said.
“We’re seeing a radical shift in student perceptions in a matter of just two years; teachers are dealing with a lot of disillusionment. “The implications for the teaching community are clear and it is our responsibility to work with this knowledge to effectively prepare student teachers to ensure they are not overwhelmed when they enter the field.”
