UQ’s Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre’s (JKMRC) technology transfer vehicle, JKTech, won the Smart Award of the Year in the Mining or Minerals Processing category.
JKTech, formed in 1986 to commercialise research outcomes from the JKMRC, has helped improve the productivity and profitability of mining and mineral processing operations by applying innovative software products and delivering specialist consulting and laboratory services.
Managing Director Dr Geoff Gault said the company had made two applications for SMART Awards, including Flotation Optimisation Methodology and the Mineral Liberation Analyser software that operates on a scanning electron microscope for detailed analysis of mineral samples.
In the Smart Awards Science or Technology category, Alchemia took top honours.
The company was founded by UQ’s Professor Istvan Toth and former staff members Professor Peter Andrews and Dr
Tracie Ramsdale, who took on the challenge of unlocking the therapeutic potential of carbohydrates, one of the last remaining groups of biological macromolecules with untapped potential.
UniQuest Pty Ltd, UQ’s main technology transfer company, was a finalist in the Services category.
