Tourism Turbulence
![]() |
Since its inception in 2000, the Centre for Tourism and Risk Management at UQ Ipswich has been a research leader in this specialist area of tourism research.
Original research and international collaborations have produced two books, Managing Tourist Health and Safety in the New Millennium (2003) and Tourism Risk Management for the Asia Pacific Region (2004), as well as a large number of refereed journal articles and conference presentations.
Tourism in Turbulent Times (2005, in press) brings together the Centre’s cumulative research findings by drawing on the background and expertise of Centre collaborators from 11 countries, representing scholars, government officers and industry practitioners.
It addresses traditional concerns for tourism such as crime, as well as emerging challenges posed by the global movement of infectious disease and terrorism. These topics are examined by specialists, who believe tourism can weather turbulent times through adopting risk management strategies and continuing to provide quality service for customers.
Centre Director Professor Jeff Wilks has been active in danger prevention research and is working with Surf Life Saving Australia on safety information for tourists.
