| Professor Alan Lopez |
Professor Lopez said he wanted to establish the SOPH as a leader in international public health research.
"I want the School to be outward-looking and responsive to international health challenges," Professor Lopez said.
"When the World Bank wants reliable research on the health of populations in the region - such as mortality rates in China - we'll have the expertise to do it."
Professor Lopez said the School could also play an important role in helping make Australia a world leader in flexible health policy through greater integration of evidence-based medicine.
The development of a universally accepted statistical accounting method to measure health status has established Professor Lopez as a major figure in international health policy.
The Global Burden of Disease Study, which he co-authored, provides an analytical basis for public health policy.
It enables nations to more appropriately allocate funds to the most critical areas of health, and provides methods for better assessment of health systems.
