This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) seeks to stimulate research focused on identification of the key barriers to effective end-of-life and palliative care (EOLPC) health literacy in diverse settings and populations, and to create novel strategies, interventions, and models of care to improve EOLPC health literacy, with the goal of improving outcomes for individuals with serious, advanced illness and their families and caregivers.

By using the R21 mechanism, the NIH seeks to foster the introduction of novel scientific ideas, model systems, tools, agents, targets, and technologies that have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. An R21 grant application needs not have extensive background material or preliminary information. Appropriate justification for the proposed work can be provided through literature citations, data from other sources, or, when available, from investigator-generated data.

Research projects may include studies which consider variables that impact EOLPC health literacy such as: race, culture/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geographic location, language, physical/intellectual abilities, family structures, community roles in decision-making and care, age, diagnosis, prognosis, and disease trajectory.

Eligibility
• Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are eligible to apply.
• Applications from Foreign Organizations: Reviewers will assess whether the project presents special opportunities for furthering research programs through the use of unusual talent, resources, populations, or environmental conditions that exist in other countries and either are not readily available in the United States or augment existing U.S. resources.

Funding
• Application budgets are limited to USD $275,000 for direct costs per funding period. No more than $200,000 may be requested in any single year.
• The project period may not exceed 2 years.
