2019 Branco Weiss Fellowships – Society in Science

The Branco Weiss Fellowship – Society in Science is a unique postdoc program. It awards young researchers around the world with a generous personal research grant, giving them the freedom to work on whatever topic they choose anywhere in the world, for up to five years. Applications for the 2019 fellowship intake are now open.

A Branco Weiss Fellow is anticipated to work on a surprisingly novel and scientifically rigorous research project, which blazes new trails and profits from the unique freedom offered by the fellowship.

Overview
• Eligibility
Candidates must:
• Officially hold a PhD on 15 January 2019;
• Have their PhD awarded after 15 January 2014;
• Be born after 31 December 1984;
• Not be Faculty members (assistant professors or lecturers) or former Faculty member;
• Propose a project that departs significantly from mainstream research in their discipline;
• Demonstrate in their proposal a willingness to engage in a dialogue on relevant social, cultural, political, or economic issues across the frontiers of their particular discipline.

• Funding
• The duration of a Branco Weiss Fellowship is 5 years, with funding of CHF 100,000 per year.
• The five-year fellowship is awarded in two instalments:
1. The pioneer phase: the first two years of research
2. The exploitation phase: the remaining three years
At the end of the pioneer phase, a review is conducted. This evaluates the project, its continued originality, and the productivity of the fellow.

• Eligible Expenses
Eligible expenses cover all legitimate costs of research (i.e. salary and/or equipment, travel expenses, consumables, personnel, etc.).

• Overheads
Indirect costs/overheads are not funded by this program.
