US Department of Defense – Parkinson's Research Program (PRP) – Investigator-Initiated Research Award
Sponsor: US Department of Defense
Closing Date: 24-Sep-2018
The Parkinson's Research Program challenges the scientific community to develop impactful research that will advance the understanding of, and ultimately end, Parkinson’s disease. The vision of the PRP is to stop Parkinson’s disease by funding research through a partnership of scientists and consumers.

The PRP Investigator-Initiated Research Award (IIRA) supports the full spectrum of research from basic science through clinical research that specifically focuses on scientific and clinical Parkinson’s disease issues, which, if successfully addressed, have the potential to make a major impact in understanding, preventing, diagnosing, or treating Parkinson’s disease or enhancing the well-being of individuals experiencing the impact of the disease. All applications to this funding mechanism must address at least one of the following FY18 PRP IIRA Focus Areas:
• Genetic stratification of suspected environment factors that are quantifiable on the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease
• Biological mechanisms of impact from exercise on neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease

Eligibility
• Independent investigators at Assistant Professor level or above (or equivalent) are eligible to be named as an Initiating or Partnering PI.

Key Mechanism Elements
• Supports highly rigorous, high-impact research projects that have the potential to make an important contribution to Parkinson’s disease research and/or patient care.
• Potential impact of research may be near term or long term, but it must be significant and go beyond an incremental advancement.
• Must address at least one of the FY18 PRP IIRA Focus Areas.
• Preliminary data to support feasibility are required..
• Submission of a Letter of Intent is required prior to full application submission.
• Clinical trials are not allowed under this mechanism.
Partnering PI option:
- Provides a higher level of funding to support synergistic partnerships between two or three independent investigators collaborating on a single application.
- PIs are expected to demonstrate within the application the synergistic components that will significantly advance the project such that the research outcomes could not otherwise be accomplished through independent efforts of a single PI.

Funding
• Individual PIs: Maximum funding of USD $1.5 million for total costs (includes direct and indirect costs).
• Partnering PI Option: Maximum funding of USD $2M for total costs (includes direct and indirect costs)
• Maximum period of performance is 3 years.
