US Department of Defense – Orthotics and Prosthetics Outcomes Research Program (OPORP) – Clinical Research Award (CRA)

The OPORP Clinical Research Award mechanism is offered for the first time in FY18 and challenges the scientific community to address which orthotic and prosthetic devices, and which characteristics of those devices, generate the best patient outcomes. It is expected that research findings will have relevance to Service members and Veterans and also provide benefit to the general population.

The FY18 OPORP CRA is focused on outcomes-based best practices through analysis of prosthetic and/or orthotic device options that are currently available, and not on the development of a new technology or the improvement of an existing technology. The intent of the award is to generate clinically useful evidence that will enhance and optimize patient outcomes.

Eligibility
• Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to apply.

Key Mechanism Elements
• Supports research that evaluates the comparative effectiveness of orthotic and/or prosthetic clinical interventions using patient-centric outcomes for Service members and Veterans with limb loss and/or limb impairment.
• Proposed projects should be designed to provide outcomes data regarding orthotic and/or prosthetic devices and must include the anticipated effect on patient care metrics.
• Collaboration among academia, industry, the DoD, and the Department of Veterans Affairs(VA) is highly encouraged, including longitudinal outcome studies.
• Applications submitted to the FY18 OPORPCRA must address one or more of the FY18OPORP Focus Areas.
• Animal studies are not allowed.
• Clinical trials are not allowed.
• Preproposal submission is required; application submission is by invitation only.

Funding
Funding Level 1:
• Maximum funding of USD $350,000 for total costs (direct costs plus indirect costs).
• Maximum period of performance is 2 years.

Funding Level 2:
• Maximum funding of USD $1,500,000 for total costs (direct costs plus indirect costs).
• Maximum period of performance is 4 years.
