The Neurofibromatosis Research Program seeks to support innovative, high-impact research that will foster new directions for and address neglected issues in neurofibromatosis (NF) research; sponsor multidisciplinary and multi-institutional collaborations that will bring new perspectives to the field; promote translational and clinical studies to move promising ideas from bench to bedside; and develop a balanced portfolio of meritorious research related to all aspects of NF type 1 (NF1) and type 2 (NF2), and schwannomatosis. The FY18 NFRP strongly encourages research applications that specifically address the critical needs of the NF community in one or more of the Areas of Emphasis.

The intent of the NFRP New Investigator Award is to support the continued development of promising independent investigators and/or the transition of established investigators from other research fields into a career in the field of NF research.

Eligibility
• Must be either:
- An independent investigator at or below the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent) and must plan to commit at least 30% of his/her effort toward the proposed research project;
or
- An established independent investigator in an area other than NF at or above the level of Assistant Professor seeking to transition into a career in NF research and must plan to commit at least 10% of his/her effort toward the proposed research project.
• To be eligible, applicants may not have received more than $300,000 in direct costs for NF research as a PI of one or more Federally funded, non-mentored peer reviewed grants.

Key Mechanism Elements
• Prior experience in NF research is not required.
• Preliminary and/or published data relevant to NF and the proposed research project is required.
• Research projects may focus on any phase of research; however clinical trials are not allowed.

Funding
• Maximum funding of USD $450,000 for direct costs (plus indirect costs).
• Maximum period of performance is 3 years.
