2019 Heart Foundation Vanguard Grants
Sponsor: National Heart Foundation of Australia
Closing Date: 03-May-2018
Applications for the Heart Foundation’s Vanguard Grants scheme for funding commencing in 2019 are now open. The purpose of the Vanguard Grant is to provide funding to test the feasibility of innovative concepts in public health or health services, including clinical service delivery, which may lead to larger, more rigorous studies in the future. Vanguard Grants encourage research and innovation in clinical or public health interventions and cardiovascular health practices. The Heart Foundation supports research into the causes, treatment and prevention of heart, stroke and blood vessel disease. Details of 2017 research funding offers are available at https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/research/research-funding.

Applications will be assessed by a Vanguard Grant Committee (VCG) made up of nine to twelve eminent cardiovascular researchers with broad research experience in areas including public health, health services and clinical service delivery. In Stage 1 of the application process, the VCG will assess the application based on (1) how well the application addresses the purpose of the award and (2) the potential of the project to produce tangible outcomes which may lead to improvements in cardiovascular health. This assessment will be based on the ‘Executive Summary’ only. Applications that progress to Stage 2 (top 30%-50% of applications) will undergo a detailed review of the full application and ranking by the VGC.

Aim: The projects will provide tangible outcomes with the potential to improve cardiovascular health. This award is open to all cardiovascular researchers but will not fund basic research as basic clinical or biomedical research projects are very unlikely to address the purpose of a Vanguard Grant.

Funding Details: The duration of the 2019 heart Foundation Vanguard Grants is one year with funding of $75,000. Funds may not be used to support salary for the applicant (CIA) or a stipend for a PhD student.

Eligibility:
• No more than two applications may be submitted by an applicant (CIA) and an applicant may receive only one Vanguard Grant on which they are the ‘applicant’ (CIA) in any one year.
• CIA must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident or must have applied to become an Australian permanent resident at the time of application. Evidence that Australian permanent residency has been granted will be required before an award can commence.
