Heart Foundation Stroke Prevention Grant
Sponsor: National Heart Foundation of Australia
Closing Date: 08-May-2017
The Heart Foundation is currently accepting applications for a one-off research funding opportunity to address the prevention of stroke including (but not limited to) atrial fibrillation (AF), hypertension, vascular aspects of dementia, atherosclerosis, and vascular biology of stroke. Applications may relate to any research discipline (i.e. biomedical, clinical, public health, health services) or be cross-disciplinary.

It is expected that this funding opportunity will create an outstanding program of work that is highly-esteemed, internationally competitive, collaborative, multi-disciplinary and able to leverage significant further funding. The Heart Foundation contribution for the Stroke Prevention Grant will be up to $3 - 5 million in total. The duration of funding will be up to 5 years and it is anticipated that 1 - 2 programs will be funded nationally.

Eligibility criteria include the following:
• This Award will be open to all applicants who can demonstrate an ability to conduct a program of research in stroke prevention. Ideally applicants will be senior, experienced and have a significant track record in national and/or international collaborations and an ability to attract further funding for the program.
• All Investigators can only be named as an Investigator on one grant application.
• The Heart Foundation-funded component of the research must be undertaken in Australia.
• The funding may be used to update an existing research project or collaboration, but should be a significant novel expansion of the existing work and clearly identifiable as a Heart Foundation Research Program.
• The Chief Investigator A must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident or must have applied to become an Australian permanent resident

Application Process
As Heart Foundation funding is intended to leverage other contributions, UQ has formulated a process for requesting UQ cash commitments. For further details on UQ cash support, please email grants-manager@research.uq.edu.au as soon as possible, but no later than 8 May 2017.

Applicants initially submit a Letter of Intent on the Heart Foundation’s new online application system. Applications that are successful through this first round will be invited to submit full applications to the Heart Foundation. Applicants that are successful through the second round of assessment (Full Application Review) will be invited to attend an interview with the peer review committee.

The online application form for the Stroke Prevention Grant is accessed on the Heart Foundation’s website at https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/research/research-funding/apply-for-funding/stroke-prevention-grant. Instructions to Applicants and a Word version of the application form for reference are available on the website.

Given that only 1-2 programs will be awarded nationally, UQ anticipates submitting one high quality collaborative proposal as lead institution. Prospective applicant/s are asked to advise UQR&I of their intent to apply by 8 May 2017, earlier if possible, given the focus on coordinating a single collaborative lead proposal.

Any queries may be directed to UQR&I at grants-manager@research.uq.edu.au.
