ERA - Excellence in Research for Australia
The Australian Research Council's 2010 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative confirmed The University of Queensland as one of the nation's top two universities, measured on a combination of research quality and breadth.
The ERA initiative collected data regarding the quality of research activity undertaken at all eligible higher education research institutions within the ERA 2010 reference period. These data were then evaluated by eight Research Evaluation Committees, established at a discipline cluster level, and comprised of distinguished and internationally recognised researchers with expertise in research evaluation.
ERA reported that research at UQ is above world standard in more broad fields than at any other Australian university (in 21 out of 25 broad fields): this reflects UQ's leading global role in many areas of discovery. As well as 28 specialised fields of research in which UQ research was rated well above world standard, UQ was the highest ranked university nationally in another 13 fields. ERA also confirmed UQ as one of Australia's most comprehensive universities: active in 24 out of a possible 25 broad fields of research.
More researchers at UQ are working in research fields that ERA has assessed above world standard than at any other Australian university. UQ's outstanding critical mass offers researchers significant interdisciplinary capability.
UQ's research in biomedical and clinical health sciences, biotechnology, engineering, biological sciences, environmental sciences, and physical sciences was ranked well above world standard (rating 5).
The National Report of the 2010 ERA was released in January 2011.
ERA 2012
The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, the Hon Senator Kim Carr, announced on 25 October 2010 that another round of ERA is scheduled for 2012.
On 16 September 2011, the ARC released the ERA 2012 Submission Guidelines, Discipline Matrix, and the ERA-SEER 2012 Technology Pack; the ERA 2012 submission phase will open in March 2012.
