Research Interests

Firas has interests in polymer surface modification and synthesis of speciality polymers for biological and biomedical applications. His recent research focus is on biomaterials discovery and development using high throughput techniques, controlled graft polymerization with emphasis on surfaces for solid phase applications. He has interests and good track record of successfully evolving research concepts to commercial products, few e.g., (i) Development of new concept in polymer surface modification for the immobilization and display of biomolecules (Polymerat Pty Ltd), which resulted in 3 US/International Patents and several publications. (ii)“SynphaseTM Lanterns” for solid phase combinatorial synthesis (Mimotopes P/L Australia). (iii) A Novel visible light initiated photocurable biopolymer system for orthopaedic applications (Smith & Nephew Research UK) and (iv) polymerizable UV absorbers / optical brightener system for polymeric surface coatings in hot arid environment (Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research “KISR”) which also resulted in several patents and refereed publications. His currently research work involves the development of Bioactive Bandage for chronic wound healing and the development of a novel in-situ curable hydrogel scaffold for dental and maxilo-facial bone regeneration.
