Carl is currently an Associate Professor within the School of Pharmacy where he has been since 2002.

Carl Kirkpatrick obtained his undergraduate pharmacy qualifications in New Zealand in 1990 from the University of Otago. Since graduating he has worked in all aspects of community and hospital pharmacy. From 1994 to 2002 he worked in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand. During this time he completed a PhD from the University of Otago (2002) titled "Utilising the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationships of aminoglycosides to optimise dosing".

Since 2002, Carl has undertaken a post-doctoral research fellowship within the School of Pharmacy, and then a lectureship in 2004.

Research Interests

Carl has a wide range of research interests including population pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, how drugs and diseases alter renal function, dose-adjustment in renal dysfunction, dosing and monitoring of antibiotics (especially aminoglycosides), drugs in breast milk, the quality use of medicines, and reducing adverse drug events in hospitals.
