Since 1991, UQ Traffic & Parking has invested more than $50 million to create new parking facilities, to purchase modern and user-friendly equipment, and to make campus parking more safe, secure, equitable, accessible, and environmentally responsible. The Paid Parking Scheme is the sole source of funds for UQ Traffic & Parking, and income is invested in areas such as infrastructure, equipment, maintenance, and road safety. UQ Traffic and Parking is a not-for-profit organization, aiming only for 100% cost recovery.
Each year, parking fees for the ensuing year are recommended by the Traffic & Parking Policy Advisory Committee, reviewed by Finance Committee, and approved by University Senate. The current revision, effective from 1st January 2009, will help meet the cost of ongoing improvements to parking facilities for vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles, plus road safety infrastructure to contain the speed of vehicles to the prescribed limit.
The GST treatment of parking permits is complicated and may vary from campus to campus and from type-of-user to type-of-user. When GST applies to permit parking the cost is absorbed rather than added to the non-GST fee so that all users of the particular type of parking pay at the same rate.

New footpaths and the boardwalk across the lake are examples of the way in which parking funds are used to improve access to the campus from parking areas and the UQ Lakes bus terminus. Many people use this infrastructure after crossing the Eleanor Schonell Bridge from Dutton Park. |
