Estimating the Contribution made by Illicit Drug Use to the Global Burden of Disease Overview In 2001-2002 the World Health Organisation (WHO) updated its 1996 report on the Global Burden of Disease by estimating the contribution made to the disease burden by 20 risk factors. The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre was commissioned by WHO to estimate the contribution that illicit drug use made to disease burden. This involved analyses of epidemiological studies of premature mortality caused by illicit drug use. The data from these studies were used, in combination with the estimated prevalence of illicit drug use in WHO health regions, to estimate the total number of deaths in the world in 2000 that were attributable to illicit drug use.
