David Turnbull

PhD Candidate

David holds a BA in philosophy from UQ and a research MA in Applied Ethics from QUT. Since 1998 he has worked in bioethics for Queensland Advocacy Incorporated (QAI). His association with OPPE began in 2001 with the convening of BEING (Biotechnology and Ethics Interest Group). In June 2002 QAI and BEING jointly conducted a workshop which featured a wide variety of researchers in biotechnology and ethics. This was followed by a workshop in October 2002 “Genetics and Disability: Exploring Different Spaces, Different Futures” which brought together previously disparate groups from clinical genetics and the disability sector. Material from this workshop is available at http://www.qai.org.au/content/workshop.cfm

David was also involved collaboratively with OPPE, Bright Minds, BEING, and Biotechnology Australia in the October 2002 Hypothetical “Going for Gold”, an exploration of the new reproductive technologies and the new genetics, since developed into a video recording available from OPPE. Since then he has begun an ongoing collaboration with A/Prof Ross Barnard (Biotechnology Program, UQ) resulting so far in a poster presentation at the 2003 Melbourne Congress of Genetics, entitled “The Incompatibility of Genetic Axioms with Axioms of Justice and Ethics Requires a Third Space for Deliberation”. The work continues.

Research Interests

David’s PhD is to be entitled “On Being Contemporary: Dialogue and Moral Space”. The research explores the concept and implications of “bridge-building” in the contemporary world, focussing on case studies in genetics and disability. This involves making both philosophical and practical investigations, which may be combined into one approach: the philosophical contemporary. The main site of David’s work is at UQ Ipswich Campus in Contemporary Studies, supported encouragingly and ably by OPPE.
