Susan Treloar is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow with the Office of Public Policy and Ethics at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience. Sue is a Senior Research Officer in the Genetic Epidemiology Unit at Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR), and a Research Fellow in the School of Social Work and Applied Human Sciences at the University of Queensland. Her background is in public health research and teaching, originally at the University of Sydney. There she worked with Professor Charles Kerr for several years, and became interested in clinical genetics as well as in women's health and health care delivery.

Research Interests

In 1988 Sue moved to Brisbane and into genetic epidemiology with Professor Nick Martin at QIMR, to investigate the extent of genetic contributions to women's health. Her first paper in this field reported genetic influences on age at menarche, based on research involving twin pairs from the Australian Twin Registry. Sue's interest in genetics and twin research has also been influenced by the fact that she is an identical twin. Over the past decade or so she has investigated problems including predictors of hysterectomy, genetic influences on early cancer detection behaviours, postnatal depression, premenstrual and menstrual symptoms, pre-eclampsia of pregnancy, and age at menopause. She has spent much of her time since 1995 as project leader for a very large international study aiming to identify genes predisposing women to endometriosis.

Sue's research interests have recently expanded to include working with Dr. Sandy Taylor (The University of Queensland) and Dr. Margaret Otlowski (The University of Tasmania) on their ARC-funded national study of Genetic Discrimination in Australia.
