Amy Orlandi
Undergraduate Student
Amy recently came
to the University of Queensland in February of 2004 as a
study abroad student to complete one year of her degree in Australia.
Her home
institution is the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where she is
currently
pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology as well as a certificate
that
integrates Culture, Health and Science. After completion of her degree
she
would like to obtain a Masters in Public Health and Epidemiology.
During her time abroad in Australia, Amy has volunteered her time to
work with
Community Support for Refugees and St. Vinnie's to tutor a Somalian mother
and daughter and help a Rwandan family adjust to Brisbane life. She has
spent her free time traveling around various parts of Australia with
her best
friend from home, Jessica. Of all of her experiences here, her most memorable
moment was having to be rescued by a tall sail ship when kayaking around
the
Whitsunday Islands.
Research
Interests
In her time
at OPPE Amy studied the public policy of stem cells in the United
States and the methods in which U.S. researchers contiued to pursue their
research despite Bush's restriction of public funding on non-approved
cell
lines.
