Jennifer Fleming

PhD Student

Jennifer was awarded a (mid year) IMB Research Scholarship in 2003 and began her PhD at the end of August 2003. With over 15 year professional experience in medical research management, clinical research ethics and medical education, Jennifer has continued to be committed to the development of balanced regulatory and ethical frameworks to engender optimal research practice. She graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts and from the University of New South Wales in 1988 with a Masters of Health Administration –Research - Thesis: “Health Promotion: An evaluation of the worksite health screening program (Newcastle Regional Coal Board Medical Division)”.

Jennifer is currently a Board Member of the Australian Institute of Health Law and Ethics and was the Queensland Chapter President of the Australasian Research Management Society up until the end of 2003. She has continued to provide professional support from time to time on preparation of research grant submissions submitted by various departments of the University of Queensland . In 2003 she was an invited consultant to the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute on Research Capacity Strengthening, Profiling Individual & Team Research Capacity – Curriculum Vitae & Grant Writing. She has previously served on AHEC – NHMRC Steering Committees and Human Research Ethics Committees and Animal Ethics Committees.


Research Interests

Jennifer’s research interests include exploring health law and ethics issues raised by:
- translational genetic research
- clinical trials and emerging technologies such as neurosciences
- research involving patients with impaired capacity
- commercialisation and globalisation of clinical and genetic research
