December graduation stories

Thank you all for sharing your faculty and school information ahead of December graduations, which run from Thursday 8–Friday 16 December. The information you supply ensures the VC representative speeches are tailored to each graduating cohort.

We’ll also be running a series of news stories from around the University in the lead up to graduations and during the week. If you are submitting a story, the deadline is no less than a week out from the graduation date. This allows us time to edit and schedule the story at a very busy time. Send all stories to j.kirkland@uq.edu.au or communications@uq.edu.au.

Change of venue for OP Results Advice Night

Please be aware that the 2016 OP Results Advice Night on Monday 19 December will take place in the level 3 foyer of the Advanced Engineering Building.

This is a change from its usual location at the UQ Centre, which is undergoing refurbishment during summer semester. If your area is planning to promote the event, please ensure this change is reflected in your communications. Also, the change of venue means a change in the location of the seminar sessions and free parking for attendees.

For more details, check the event website closer to the event date or contact Ashleigh Young.

Make a journalist’s wish come true this festive season

The Christmas decorations are up, yuletide carols are playing and Santa has taken up temporary residence in shopping centres everywhere, signifying that the festive season is upon us.

This period is packed with opportunities for UQ communications officers, as journalists everywhere scramble for content during this traditionally quieter period in the news cycle.

Let’s create a very merry Christmas for media by distributing releases and pitching story ideas, particularly those with relevance to the time of year (such as angles on health, stress, finance, safety, tourism, relationships and much more).

It’s also a great time for recycling, as stories that weren’t picked up during the year can go gangbusters in the summer holiday period (for example, stories on stress, pets, and Christmas).

Contact the OMC Communications team to discuss ideas and pitch approaches.

The Faculty of Medicine Team

Our Faculty has lived and breathed the Create Change campaign in 2016. In addition to changing our Faculty name and searching for a new Dean, the marketing team has been committed to change too, with six new team members joining us over the course the year.

Before we came together in July this year, the Faculty had marketing staff scattered across the university and a team of three worked from the Faculty office. We’ve done some reshuffling and now have a team of ten structured on an agency model with marketing managers managing key accounts (schools, centres, institutes) and a team of specialists to support our client needs.

We are blown away every day by some of the stories we get to share and keep our sanity through office ping pong battles, frisbee wars and copious amounts of caffeine.

Recent achievements/ongoing projects:

  • Condensing 10 existing newsletters into two for the entire Faculty using dynamic content (everyone loves a newsletter)
  • Migrating websites for the faculty, three schools and three institutes and combining a School site with the Faculty
  • Developing an integrated digital campaign for the Master of Public Health
  • Developing a suite of marketing templates for all of our centres/institutes/schools to use
  • Increasing our video content with 20+ videos produced in the past six months
  • Centralising our Twitter accounts to a single account, with substantially increased engagement and followers.

The Medicine Marketing Mos

The Medicine Marketing office has had three very unattractive additions join the team this month.

While the new additions have been an unwanted distraction at Herston, it is all to raise funds for Men’s Health. Justin Laing, Brian Mallon and Phil Van Zyl are sporting some very unattractive facial hair for Movember and are aiming to raise $2000 for the Movember Foundation.

All donations, big or small, are welcome and you can show your support by clicking hair.

The team (L-R): Bernadette O’Connor, Kate Templeman, Monique Chang, Jessica Boulter, Justin Laing, Brian Mallon, Kirsten Dodd, Kim Lyell, Phil Van Zyl, Avril Johnston-Craig, Lisa Gotto.
