Contact Summer 2014 out now  

The latest issue of Contact magazine is available to download as a free app for iPad and Android tablets.

The Contact app includes the full version of the magazine and offers exclusive content, including videos, photo galleries and book extracts.

For the first time, extensive additional editorial content is available in the Contact app. Several stories relating to UQ's engagement in China are available in Mandarin and English as part of the Spotlight on China feature.  

The UQ Contact website is now live, and features highlights from the magazine, as well as a donor honour roll, links to the other UQ alumni publications and past issues available for download.

 #ObamaUQ media coverage

US President Barack Obama’s speech at UQ on Saturday was a major success. Lots of last-minute work went into the event, which generated a huge amount of media coverage for UQ. Some stats you might be interested in:

  • A conservative evaluation of media coverage from Monday 10 November to Monday 17 November reveals an estimated advertising value equivalent of $12, 295,301.
  • UQ Facebook garnered 1193 new followers (compared to an average increase of about 400 followers a week).
  • Instagram followers increased by 370, with #ObamaUQ used 412 times.
  • Twitter followers increased by 283. #ObamaUQ was used too often to count. Tracking tools cap at 2000 and we had that many hits on Monday morning alone. There were 620 tweets with the #ObamaUQ hashtag per minute throughout the President’s speech.
  • The #ObamaUQ Twitter retweet reach has been calculated at 767,800 people.

Appspace digital signage

UQ digital signage is featured across UQ campuses via a network of display screens. These signs are available to promote messages to UQ staff and students, and are managed centrally through an online service called Appspace.

Usage guidelines have been developed to help content managers produce effective signs. You can view these on the OMC website

Editable templates are also available and can be uploaded to Appspace or the DMM system. Download the templates here

Heads-up – AusSMC

Have you considered notifying The Australian Science Media Centre of any future science announcements?

AusSMC often helps scientists reach the media by adding research announcements to the twice-weekly embargoed media alert (AKA: Heads-up).

These alerts briefly outline what the AusSMC considers the most newsworthy new research, reports and related material being published by the scientific community.

Journalists access the AusSMC briefs because they often summarise the week’s most significant research - and the science journals trust AusSMC with their embargoed material.

Many UQ researchers have had great success using AusSMC services.
