New UQ News website launched

Get involved with the UQ Instagram account

The UQ Instagram account, @uniofqld, has grown to more than 1000 followers, with a strong increase as a result of promotion during O Week. OMC's Marketing team is keen to work with Network members to promote initiatives via Instagram.

Recently we worked with the UQ Alumni and Community Relations team to celebrate the December graduations. Graduates were encouraged to participate in on-campus activities in Campbell Place and share photos on Instagram using the tag #uqmemories. Almost 200 photos were uploaded with the tag.

The best Instagram images are visually striking, highlight details or interesting perspectives, or offer exclusive access to UQ areas or events. If you have an event, initiative or individual image that you would like to promote on Instagram, please contact Keziah Radke.

Discover the new UQ Advantage Office

At the beginning of this year, the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) was renamed the UQ Advantage Office (UQAO). A number of exciting developments have occurred since OUE was established 2008, and this new name has been chosen to reflect the full spectrum of programs and support available through the UQ Advantage Office to undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students.

Careers and Graduate Employment has moved from Student Services to become part of the Office, which sits under Student Affairs and also incorporates UQ Abroad and Student Engagement. With these teams working together, the UQ Advantage Office takes a holistic approach to global study, leadership, research and employability. If you have any questions about the UQ Advantage Office, please visit the website or contact Dr Annabelle Willox on ext. 67012.

UQ in North America

The UQ North America office manages and implements UQ's global and philanthropic programs in North America. The office, located in Washington, DC, plays a significant role in the enhancement and expansion of the University's profile through various activities including interlinking research and academic partnerships, alumni and community engagement and philanthropy.

If you are undertaking activity relevant to North America, contact Khatmeh Osseiran-Hanna, Director of UQ Advancement and Executive Director, The University of Queensland in America, Inc., and Jen (Nielsen) Kane, Associate Director – Education. You can also keep up with the latest news from the North America office by subscribing to the UQ North America newsletter.

Case study: Pitch Drop selfie competition

The Faculty of Science engagement team is harnessing the cult of the selfie to maintain interest in the Pitch Drop experiment and boost traffic to the Ninth Watch website. The Pitch Drop selfie competition for UQ students was created to foster a sense of UQ community among students, to promote UQ Science via the widespread interest in the experiment, to generate interest about the experiment among new students, and to showcase our beautiful campus to international followers by setting up a gallery page of the shortlisted selfies after the competition.

The competition forms part of the communications strategy around the long-running Pitch Drop experiment, which has already harnessed strong media attention, including making the front cover of the Wall Street Journal

Promotion of the competition within the University through Facebook and Twitter channels has encouraged further social media interaction with the experiment among students. The Pitch Drop selfie competition is an example of how to harness social trends and current interest to meet specific engagement goals. The next step for the Pitch Drop team will be to open this competition to the experiment’s large follower base worldwide.

Make it simple. Make it memorable. Make it inviting to look at. Make it fun to read. – Leo Burnett
