Express your interest in a UQ social media seminar

Social media has become an important part of any marketing and communications professional’s tool kit. To help the Network keep up to date in this area, OMC are planning a social media seminar in August in conjunction with the School of Journalism and Communication. The date and format of the seminar is still being confirmed but is likely to be held in the week beginning 19 August, over 3 hours. If you are interested in finding out more as information becomes available, please complete our EOI form.

Thank you to the M&C staff across the university participating in interviews to help inform content for the seminar. We hope to offer a valuable seminar that caters for all levels of knowledge from social media beginners to more experienced. If you have any questions, please contact Carly Barrett.

Accessibility requirements for online video

Under current legislation and government policy, people with disabilities must have equal rights, equal opportunities and equal access to online information and services. UQ’s websites and online services must comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0) to ensure they can be accessed and used by anybody, regardless of their abilities or the type of technology they use.

An important aspect of WCAG 2.0 is the provision of video transcripts and captioning of videos posted online. This can apply to news articles, videos on YouTube or through social media. Transcripts and captions open up our content to a larger audience, including visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing viewers and those who speak other languages.

Presently an easy way to caption and to provide transcriptions for videos is through YouTube. You can then provide your audience with a link to the video. Details on how to caption and transcribe videos can be found here. A list of companies who provide captioning and transcription services can be found here. An example of a captioned and transcribed video can be viewed here.

As accessibility of online content is now a legislative requirement, all departments, schools and faculties are encouraged to understand their responsibilities regarding the publishing of online content and consider how they plan to make their content more accessible in the short and long term.

For those interested in understanding more about accessibility and what you can do to improve your website email Web Services.

Diversity Week 2013 wrap-up

Thank you to all the members of the Network who held or helped to promote events during this year's Diversity Week. There were over 15 events and activities, culminating with the 2013 Vice-Chancellor's Equity and Diversity Awards. This year’s award winners included Professor Linda Richards for developing the internationally recognised Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC); a multi-disciplinary team of academics from pharmacy, language learning and higher education who collaborated to develop the Skills for Communicating and Relating in Pharmacy Training program (SCRIPT); and Dr Richard Lewandowski for his development of Operation Smile Australia, a not-for-profit organisation that provides reconstructive surgery to children born with facial deformities in developing countries. The video presentations for each of the award winners can be viewed here. If your school, faculty or department would like to use any of these videos contact Sara Ledermann.

Graduation time: faculty success stories needed

Each graduation features a speech by the President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Høj, or one of his representatives.

The Communications team are currently collating relevant successes and notable achievements, and would appreciate the Network sending through:

  • good news stories from your school or faculty
  • recent key rankings and funding achievements – Information on your valedictorian
  • notable student successes

We've sent around a simple template to make this task easier for each school and faculty. If you haven't received this template, please contact the Communications team in OMC.

We are also looking for good news stories to pitch to media – these may also be sent through to the Communications team.

Your time and effort on graduation speeches and stories is greatly appreciated.
