ChangeMakers magazine released next week

ChangeMakers is UQ’s industry-focused magazine that highlights UQ’s high-profile research, teaching and engagement success stories.

In the latest edition, discover how UQ researchers are harnessing native Australian spinifex grass to revolutionise everyday products and create new opportunities for remote Australian communities; plus, hear from Professor Xue Li from UQ’s School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering about big data and its timely applications to improve society.

Also read about UQ’s recently announced five-year strategy to change the way our students learn and experience university life, creating game-changing graduates empowered to create change in their own lives and the world around them.

All stories from the new edition will be available on the ChangeMakers website in a new, easy-to-read Shorthand format from Wednesday 27 August.

UQ brand update: Gotham font

OMC is reviewing UQ’s Corporate Identity Policy, and we will be recommending that the Gotham typeface becomes UQ’s base typeface for all branded materials and communications (brochures, guides, advertising, publications, etc).

OMC will fund a bulk purchase of licences.

We aim to strike a good balance between cost and brand effectiveness, so please consider the nature of the work that you and your colleagues will be undertaking. If staff are likely to be producing or editing branded marketing materials for an external audience, it would seem appropriate for them to have access to the new fonts. If staff are less directly involved in the production of these materials, the free alternative, Montserrat, is still brand-compliant and remains an acceptable substitute.

New exhibition stands

Last weekend UQ revealed its exciting new-look exhibition stands at the annual TSXPO event. The new stands have been designed to foster effective interaction with prospective students, provide strong branding opportunities for UQ, and offer functional features such as storage and the integration of iPads to assist with answering enquiries.

In 2015, UQ made the decision to replace its eight-year-old exhibition stands with a more modern design. Given the scope of work involved in replacing the stands, UQ went out to tender, and at the start of 2016 awarded the contract to iCatchers Exhibitions and Displays.

With a flexible structure allowing for a range of different sized layouts, the new stands are for use at a variety of UQ student recruitment events, from the large-scale TSXPO and UQ Open Day St Lucia events to the smaller-scale Postgrad and OP Results Advice Nights.

Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology Faculty Marketing, Communication and Outreach Team

We are the EAIT Marketing, Communication and Outreach Team and we know how to have a good time while producing engaging content that supports faculty functions, highlights research achievements, builds industry relationships and attracts staff and students to our world-class facilities and programs.

We enjoy Friday afternoon happy hour at Wordies, Boost Juice Tuesdays, burrito Wednesdays and daily coffee runs to Lakeside. Being surrounded by people designing and building cool things makes every day here interesting, even if it means frequent fire evacuations and hearing random explosions from the shock tunnel.

Recent achievements:

  • EAIT was highly commended for the Women in Engineering program in the UQ Staff Excellence Awards.
  • Roll-out of the UQ Idea Hub University wide, after EAIT implemented a successful pilot program last year.
  • All faculty websites transitioned to Drupal under a consistent structure
Projects in the works:
  • Development of the UQ life social hub
  • Redevelopment and marketing of our suite of postgraduate coursework programs
We produce an annual publication called Ingenuity, which is one small way we can share the stories, opportunities and challenges across UQ engineering and technology with our alumni and the broader community.

Media release submission

OMC has updated its documents for media release drafting and submission. The latest documents can be found on the OMC website:

Media Release Standard  Operating Procedures – this  outlines the process for  approvals and media release  distribution at UQ
Template for listing media  contacts in media releases
