PR questions answered at industry webinar

If you’re a communications staff member looking for tips and tricks in the PR field, you may wish to sign up to the PR Report website, a handy information resource for PR professionals.

The PR Report provided some insightful answers to key industry questions during an interview with PR specialist Samantha Allen, Director of Liquid Ideas. The webinar was attended by OMC staff.

A few of Samantha's answers to key questions:

  • How am I building my PR brand? Focus on your strengths. If you are a good writer, become a specialist. Make excellence a habit.
  • Am I solving the client’s problem? Listen, but find out the real problem. Give clients what they need, not what they think they need.
  • How am I future-proofing my skills? Think about which industries will be at the forefront in five years, and what workplace culture you are aiming for long-term.
  • Am I able to see PR through others’ eyes? To get PR on the agenda, ensure you understand how others are measuring PR and relate to them.
  • Can I step up to strategic thinking and counsel? Firstly, network. Think about who you already know, who you can help, and who can help you.

If you would like to hear more from staff who attended the webinar, or about other communications and PR resources available to communications staff at UQ, contact Janelle Kirkland at OMC (07 3346 0561).

Unleashing the power of the M&C Network - must attend event of the year

After the success of the inaugural Marketing and Communications conference last year, we are excited to announce the details for this year's must-attend event. The 2012 conference will be held on Monday 26 November, 8.30am - 5.00pm (with networking to follow) at the QLD Biosciences Precinct (QBP), St Lucia.

With the theme “Unleashing our Advantage”, the conference will explore ways we can unleash the power of the marketing and communications network at UQ.The new venue at QBP provides increased capacity to allow more members of the network to attend.

The organising committee, which includes various members of the UQ M&C network, has been working hard on this year’s agenda. Although the agenda is yet to be finalised, it promises to offer an exciting day of keynote speakers, concurrent sessions and valuable networking opportunities.

We are pleased to confirm that internationally acclaimed author, presenter and social commentator David Chalke has been secured as one of the keynote speakers. David is currently Strategy Planner and consultant to Quantum Market Research’s Australia SCAN, the annual monitor of cultural change and lifestyles in Australia and has more than 40 years’ experience in Australia and overseas. David’s attendance is being sponsored by Clemenger BBDO Brisbane, UQ’s advertising agency.

The conference is a great professional development opportunity for members of the Network and is an event not to be missed.

The final agenda will be available and registrations will open in mid-September.

After five months at Long Pocket, the Office of Marketing and Communications is back on Level 7 of JD Story building in a newly refurbished office.

Some of the major differences you'll notice in the new office are an open plan layout, breakout sections with chairs made from recycled coca cola bottles, a larger kitchen, ergonomic office chairs and the UQ brand colours integrated throughout the whole space.

To celebrate our arrival back at St Lucia, OMC is having an Open Day next Thursday 6 September from 9am-4pm.

If you would like to attend, please register your interest with Ginny Keegan by Tuesday 4 September.
