The Faculty of NRAVS includes the School of Animal Studies, the School of Land, Crop and Food Sciences, the School of Integrative Systems and the School of Veterinary Science, each of which is highly active in research and postgraduate training. There are also several research centres: for Animal Welfare and Ethics; Companion Animal Health; Native Floriculture; Nutrition and Food Science; Pesticide Application and Safety. Consequently the scope of research conducted in NRAVS is broad, ranging from the molecular characterisation of drug resistant bacteria that affect piglets through to the development of government policy for the management of forests. However, a unifying characteristic of research conducted in NRAVS is that it is driven by the needs of the many stakeholders in animal welfare, and the agricultural and natural resources sector as a whole.
The Faculty is closely engaged with industry and the public and has a good record of commercialisation of research. Recent examples of successful commercialisation include the popular “Aussie Colours” range of ornamental native plants developed in the Centre for Native Floriculture, and “Herdvac” a vaccine against salmonellosis in cattle, developed in the School of Veterinary Science.
Most researchers have strong collaborations with other research organisations, in Australia and overseas and the Faculty as a whole is strengthening the collaborative arrangements with CSIRO and with DPI&F. This is being achieved through the increasing use of joint appointments of key staff to maximise the benefits to all institutions involved and to increase the efficiency with which research can be conducted in an environment in which research funds are scarce. The Centre for Advanced Animal Science, supported by the Queensland Government (Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry) through the Smart State program, by DPI&F, and by UQ is a $35 million research facility that will ensure that Queensland has the best animal research campus in Australia.
Formal research opportunities exist in the Faculty of NRAVS at all levels, from elective courses embedded in undergraduate courses, through Honours, Research Masters (MPhil), Doctorates (PhD), to Postdoctoral Fellowships. Broad areas of activity include, but are certainly not limited, to animal health and welfare; animal science and production; communities, regional and rural prosperity; ethical natural resource management; healthy and innovative foods; land, soil and water science; plant improvement; and wildlife management.
