What is Animal Welfare and Inspection?

Animal Welfare involves protecting the five freedoms of animal care: freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury or disease; freedom to express normal behaviour and freedom from fear and distress. Professionals who work in the
area of animal welfare aim to ensure that these five freedoms are protected regardless of whether the animals are on farm, in transit, at market and bound for slaughter.

Careers in Animal Welfare and Inspection

Graduates find employment as Biosecurity Officers (Stock Inspectors) with Government agencies such as the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F), Quarantine Officers and in Animal Production enterprises and associated service industries.

Associate Degree outline

The Animal Welfare and Inspection program meets the need, particularly of government agencies, for graduates trained in these areas to undertake biosecurity roles. As such, the program focuses on animal health and inspection, welfare and behaviour.

Why study an Associate Degree?

  • An associate degree is a two-year program which provides full articulation into a bachelor program in a directly related area of study (the previously offered diploma program only provided between 12 and 18 months credit towards a degree).
  • The associate degree program may offer the opportunity to gain prerequisite subjects at a University level (ie, Maths, Chemistry) required for entry into a degree program.
  • An associate degree qualification provides a broad-based point of entry to employment, in particular in a range of associate professional occupations.
