What is Environmental Management?

Environmental Management is the integration of economics and ecology to utilise and conserve natural systems, and includes any measures taken for the protection, conservation and preservation of the environment, heritage and natural resources.

Environmental Managers consider the scientific, technical, economic, social and management aspects of the environment to produce strategies to manage environmental resources, and to maintain the usefulness of that environment for inhabitation by humans and other species.

Careers in Environmental Management

Graduates find employment in state and federal government departments, universities, private industry including tourism, industrial organisations, or commercial consultancies dealing with environmental planning and management, environmental tourism, monitoring, and impact assessment. Students who perform well at honours level may choose a research-related career path by entering a higher degree program.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Environmental Management (Natural Systems and Wildlife) generally find employment in the private or public sector in environmental management and compliance, land care, mine rehabilitation, environmental tourism and as park rangers, managers and environmental officers with local government.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Environmental Management (Sustainable Development) are required by business, government and commercial consultancies to conduct environmental monitoring, impact assessments, to develop appropriate strategies to reduce the effects of industry and other activities on the environment and to implement ways to reduce or eliminate existing and potential environmental concerns.

Graduates in Sustainable Development are involved in designing and incorporating environmental solutions into better cities, industries, farms, mines and tourism from the individual enterprise level to state and national programs and policies.

Program Outline

By studying this degree you will be equipping yourself with the scientific, technical, financial, social and managerial information ecessary to analyse problems and produce innovative environmental management solutions.

Combine fundamental biological studies and multi-disciplinary skills in environmental management, decision making and policy analysis to develop a broad foundation in environmental management before specialising in one of two extended majors, Natural Systems and Wildlife, or Sustainable Development. The flexible structure will allow you to transfer between fields up to the end of your fourth semester, with the possibility of full credit.

This program will build on your ability to apply what you have learnt through practical experience. All students undertake a 16 week industrial placement within Australia or overseas, applying what they have learnt, acquiring new knowledge and skills and developing valuable industry contacts. As part of your assessment you will report on your activities during your industrial placement. The program
also incorporates a number of field trips to areas of environmental interest and significance in Queensland.

Program highlights

The Bachelor of Environmental Management offers students the multidisciplinary training that is needed to effectively address environmental issues in today’s society. It equips graduates to deal with the types of problems they will face in the workplace. Extended field trips and the 16 week industrial placement semester provide students with an opportunity to gain real experience in the workplace and complete a significant piece of work in their chosen area of specialisation.

In the final year of the program (Natural Systems and Wildlife), students work in small groups on a major case study applying their knowledge to real-world issues, and developing skills and
personal attributes that are valued highly by employers. The case studies are developed with and conducted on behalf of an external client or ‘industry mentor’ who works with the students throughout the year. These clients are typical of government, community-based and industry bodies involved in your potential future fields of employment and many past students have gained employment with these or related bodies.

The focus of the final year in the Sustainable Development field is the preparation of an original and individual piece of research of publishable quality. This project provides students with an opportunity to investigate in greater depth, and develop their ideas and
thinking about, an area of Sustainable Development which is of special interest to them. It allows students to develop their skills in field and literature research, critical thinking, report preparation and in written and oral presentation of their work.

Natural Systems and Wildlife

This extended major will focus on developing your expert understanding of natural environmental systems, wildlife and the interaction between the two. You will build on a platform of studies covering biology, landscape processes, ecology and the relationship between environment and community with more applied studies in wildlife and landscape management, cultural heritage and environmental
problem solving.

The electives available within this extended major offer you a variety of specialisation opportunities including ecotourism, fisheries management, conservation policy, national park management, rangeland ecology, wildlife care and husbandry and wildlife utilisation and marketing. A highlight is a three week educational excursion to arid, wet tropical terrestrial and marine tropical
environments.

Dual program opportunities

Dual programs enable you to study two complete programs at the same time, significantly reducing the time it would take to complete two programs one after the other.

Dual programs available for the Bachelor of Environmental Management (Sustainable Development) include:

  • Bachelor of Environmental Management (Sustainable Development)/Bachelor of Laws (offered at St Lucia campus).

Professional memberships

Graduates are eligible for membership of:

  • Environmental Institute of Australia
  • Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology, and
  • Soil and Water Conservation Association of Australia.
